Travel

By: Richard Pimenoff

For this weeks travel section I’ll be highlighting specific places that really catch my eye, because they capture how beautiful our world is. Every summer between semesters a lot of students have free time. I highly encourage everyone and anyone who is able to travel to do so while they are young. The world is meant to be explored. It holds a wealthy amount of experience and inspiration. (Two necessities I believe are vital in the development of the self.) If you want to find some sort of experience that can help define who you are, or just want to embark on a journey to ‘get away from it all’, travelling can provide that for you. Here are some ideas!

Arizona

A waterfall in the Grand CanyonI’ve always had a fascination with Arizona and the Grand Canyon. I’ve never travelled there and I don’t know of anyone who has. However it’s photographs such as this (photo) that compel me to visit. Just look at the colours. They are so vivid. Then there’s the Grand Canyon, a stunning wonder of the world. I’ve heard that when you descend into the canyon you can see layers of erosion on the canyon walls. Each layer represents millions of years of formation. Once you reach the bottom of the canyon you are looking at sediment that was formed billions of years ago.

“The roots of the ancient mountain range that now lies at the bottom of the Grand Canyon were formed about 1.7 billion years ago.” Source: http://www.bobspixels.com/kaibab.org/geology/gc_geol.htm

It is an astonishing fact to think about something that old. You’re literally looking into the past as you walk deeper into the canyon. It’s a fact such as this that drives me to one day visit this place. If you're interested in visiting arizona, you will find travel information on this destination at www.go-arizona.com

Quebec

The LaurentiansAn amazing destination I can recommend is the Laurentians. As a kid my family would travel to the Laurentians every summer. A part of myself grew up in these mountains. As you drive along winding roads that weave through the endless mountains covered with trees, I can’t help but stay silent as each turn feels as if you’re gazing at a brand new place you’ve never been to. It’s a weird feeling that I have difficulty describing, however it’s an incredible place made for exploring. If you’re interested in travelling to this enchanting place visit www.laurentians.com for information on tourism packages and events!

Cuba

A beach in CubaI travelled to Cuba several years ago. I stayed in a resort near a small town called Guardalavaca. This place is incredible. It has the white sandy beaches, the clear blue ocean, and a colourful culture bursting with excitement. I was there for a week in 2006. This place was my first travel destination in the Caribbean. It was really cool to experience a different kind of culture. The automobiles were from the 50’s and the food was delicious. It’s unfortunate that I was only there for roughly a week. To this day I still consider Cuba as my own personal definition of paradise. It truly describes the word in my mind. If you’ve never been to the Caribbean don’t hesitate and make this your first destination! Visit www.gocuba.ca

British Columbia

The coast of BCThere is one place I currently have my eye on as of right now, British Columbia. I have heard so many great things from friends and family who have either lived or travelled there. The best part about B.C. is that it’s in Canada, making it a much more economically friendly destination to travel. As a student it’s tough to save up extra money for travelling. Between the books, food and tuition, I feel it’s safe to assume most of us are pretty broke. However, if you find time to earn a couple of dollars during the summer for a special getaway from Toronto. B.C. feels like a great choice! You have everything here! Mountains, the ocean, forests... I’ve seen so many pictures and they are all breathtaking. This is why I believe travelling across Canada may be a better first choice before attempting to travel overseas as a Euro-trip can be expensive.
